How To Start A Home Based Dog Training BusinessMany people are dropping out from 9 to 5 jobs to start home-based businesses. Certain hobbies and interests can be turned into a profession, if pursued diligently. A good golfer, who has learnt the practical way of bettering his score, can start a website on golf or create video training course to teach/ share information for a living. An animal lover can turn his passion into business for training dogs.
Training a Dog:
Earlier the dogs were broken in or trained in a very cruel manner by sheer use of fear. They were whipped, starved, shot with buckshot or hurt with spiked collar. These cruel methods denoted lack of understanding of dog psychology and ability of the trainers. Mercifully, this practice has been done away with, now there are better ways to break in the dogs. Retrieving: The first step is to teach dog to open his mouth to slip in the object. Hold dog collar in one hand and press his drawn lip against his teeth with the other hand. This pressure opens his mouth; quickly insert some strong smelling, soft object in it. At once, he will drop it. Rap him smartly with your palm under his jaw, commanding ‘fetch' all the time. After a few days, on being commanded ‘fetch' he will pick the object on his own. Let him hold the object until he learns to open his mouth to drop it, on response to the command ‘drop'. Press the loose part of his lip against his teeth to open his mouth. Next, he should learn to walk with object in mouth. Put lead on collar, object in his mouth and start walking with him. If he drops the object while walking, press his ear and command ‘fetch' to cause him to pick it up. Reinforce constantly until he is trained. Picking An Object From The Ground: Place the object in front of him, slightly above the level of his head, so that he can seize it in one or two steps on hearing the command ‘fetch.' Gradually lower the article till he picks from ground, keep on increasing the distance too. This will teach him to pick the object dropped in front of him. Bringing Back The Tossed Object: Initially toss the object at a distance and walk with the dog the entire distance back and forth, applying pressure to ear to pick it up and walk back. He must hold the object and drop only on command ‘give.' Holding objects softly in the Mouth: A dog with hard mouth holds the object tightly and leaves bite marks. Put some small nails on the object, dogs dislike the touch of metal on their teeth. This will teach him soft mouthing on usual articles as well. With some time, patience and lots of love from the trainer, the dog gradually learns many commands. Be firm and persistent while teaching. Most important, pet him and praise him when he accomplishes a task. Alexander Gordon is a writer for http://www.smallbusinessconsulting.com - The Small Business Consulting Community.
